What Is Basal Body Temperature (BBT)?
Your **Basal Body Temperature (BBT)** is your body\'s temperature when it is at complete rest. This baseline temperature is typically reached after several hours of continuous sleep.
In the first half of your cycle (the follicular phase), estrogen keeps your BBT in a lower range (typically between **97.0°F to 97.7°F** or 36.1°C to 36.5°C). Immediately following ovulation, the corpus luteum begins producing the hormone progesterone.
Progesterone acts directly on the brain\'s hypothalamus (our internal thermostat) to raise your resting temperature by **0.5°F to 1.0°F** (to about **97.8°F to 98.6°F** or 36.6°C to 37.0°C). This elevated temperature remains until your progesterone levels drop right before your period, or remains elevated if a fertilized egg implants successfully.
The Golden Rules of Measuring BBT
Because basal temperature shifts are subtle, accuracy is critical. Follow these protocols strictly:
- Use a Basal Thermometer: Standard fever thermometers only measure to one decimal place (e.g. 98.4°F). You need a dedicated basal thermometer that measures to **two decimal places** (e.g. 98.45°F) to detect the subtle thermal shifts.
- Measure Immediately Upon Waking: Keep the thermometer on your nightstand. Before sitting up, getting out of bed, talking, drinking water, or checking your phone, place the thermometer under your tongue and wait for the reading. Any movement raises your resting temperature.
- Measure at the Same Time Daily: Set an alarm. Measure within a **30-minute window** every morning. A temperature taken at 6:00 AM will naturally be lower than one taken at 8:00 AM due to circadian rhythms.
- Ensure Consistent Sleep: You need at least **3 to 4 hours of continuous sleep** immediately prior to taking your temperature for it to represent a true basal state.
Understanding the "Biphasic" Chart Pattern
When you plot your daily BBT readings on a chart, you are looking for a **biphasic pattern** (two distinct temperature phases):
- The Low Phase: 10 to 14 days of low temperatures prior to ovulation.
- The High Phase: 11 to 16 days of elevated temperatures after ovulation.
To confirm ovulation, fertility specialists use the **"3 over 6" rule**: Ovulation is confirmed when you record **3 consecutive days of higher temperatures** that are all higher than the preceding **6 days** of low baseline temperatures. The point of transition is where a horizontal line (the **coverline**) is drawn on the chart to visually divide the two phases.
Common BBT Chart Disturbers
A single high temperature reading does not mean you ovulated if it was caused by a "disturber." Make a note on your log if you experience:
- Fever, illness, or fighting off a cold.
- Drinking alcohol the night before (which raises body temperature).
- Sleeping under a different environment (heavy blankets, heating, or AC).
- Sleeping less than 3 hours or waking up repeatedly.
- Time zone changes or travel.
The Symptothermal Method: Double-Checking BBT
While BBT is excellent for *confirming* ovulation after the fact, it does not warn you *before* ovulation occurs.
By combining BBT tracking with daily observations of **cervical mucus** (which becomes watery and egg-white *before* ovulation), you practice the **Symptothermal Method**. This dual-indicator approach is one of the most clinically verified forms of natural fertility awareness, allowing you to identify the opening of your fertile window (via mucus) and confirm its closure (via BBT thermal shift).
