What Is Ovulation and Why Does It Matter?
Ovulation is the point in your menstrual cycle when a mature ovarian follicle ruptures, releasing a mature egg (oocyte) down the fallopian tube. Once released, the egg remains viable for only 12 to 24 hours. If it does not encounter a sperm during this critical window, it disintegrates, and your hormone levels drop, leading to your period about two weeks later.
However, because sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, your actual "fertile window" is about 6 days long: the 5 days leading up to ovulation, plus the day of ovulation itself. Identifying these ovulation indicators is essential to pinpointing this peak window.

1. The "Egg-White" Cervical Mucus Shift
As estrogen levels rise during the follicular phase, they trigger shifts in your cervical glands. Immediately after your period, you may feel dry. But as you approach ovulation, your cervical mucus becomes wet, watery, and eventually resembles **raw egg whites** — clear, slippery, and stretchable for an inch or more between your fingers. This fertile mucus is biologically designed to protect sperm and help them swim upward.
2. The Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Dip and Rise
Your BBT is your body temperature when at complete rest, measured immediately upon waking up. Prior to ovulation, your BBT stays in a lower baseline range. Just before ovulation, some women experience a slight dip.
